Scale Your Business Operations Globally with Dubai Customs Registration
The UAE is one of the largest hubs for importing and exporting commodities globally. As the centre of international trade in the Middle East, the UAE enforces strict customs procedures to ensure the efficient movement of goods in and out of the country.
To begin an import-export business in the UAE, companies must obtain a valid trade licence and a Clearance Code from the Customs Department. This guide outlines the eligibility requirements, application process, and shipment protocols to help businesses stay compliant as they expand their global operations through the UAE.
Obtaining a Customs Code
A valid UAE trade or business licence is legally required for participation in cross-border trade. Dubai Customs issues a Client Code (Customs Code), which is linked to the company’s trade licence.
The Customs Client Code authorizes a business to move goods through customs. During inspection, this code is used to identify your shipments and distinguish them from others. The Client Code must be renewed every year to avoid disruption in trade activities.
The application for the Customs Code is completed online:
Visit the Dubai Trade Portal
Fill in the Customs Code application form
Submit the required documents (including trade licence, passport copies of owners/managers, Dubai Chamber of Commerce certificate, and undertaking letter)
Pay the applicable fees
Upon approval, your business will be issued a Customs Client Code
A crucial step in modern customs procedures is linking the company’s TRN to its Customs Code. This integration enables automatic VAT calculation and billing during cargo movements.
To link your TRN:
Log in to the Dubai Trade Portal
Navigate to ‘User Management’ and click on “DP World VAT Profile”
Enter the required TRN details
Submit the application
Await confirmation from the Customs Department
Once linked, the TRN allows customs authorities to track your tax status and VAT liabilities with each import/export transaction.
Customs clearance fees vary depending on shipment type and other factors. The general charges include:
Import fee: AED 15–100
Export fee: AED 15–100
Transit fee: AED 15–80
Transfer fee: AED 80
Admission fee (short period): AED 100
Knowledge fee: AED 10
Innovation fee: AED 10
Some goods require special permits or are restricted:
Pets (with pre-approval and medical test)
Food items
Medicines (with a valid prescription)
Artwork (digital or physical)
Technical equipment (in certain cases, pre-approval needed)
Alcohol and cigarettes (legal only for individuals over 18)
